Abstract

Tolkappiyar had a profound understanding of animals—their nature, characteristics, intelligence, and sensory perceptions. He explained the sensory abilities of each animal based on its intelligence through his work Marppiyal. Tolkappiyar also classified animals carefully, highlighting their unique features. Likewise, Sangam poets showcased their knowledge and understanding of animals through literature, reflecting their skill and intelligence. This study aims to compare the animals described in Tolkappiyam’s Marppiyal with their representations in Sangam literature, examining their body parts, traits, and behaviors to understand the convergence and divergence between these two classical Tamil sources.
