Abstract

The Tamil language is an enduring treasure and a lens into Tamil life and culture. It bridges the ancient and the modern, and Tolkappiyam plays a central role in this cultural continuity. The literary works developed alongside Tolkappiyam continue to showcase the pride of the Tamil people globally. Among these, the rare and comprehensive text Tolkappiyam provides insights into Tamil social and cultural life. Its Aham-Puram (interior-exterior) concepts form a core part of Tamil identity. Tolkappiyar's grammatical and thematic frameworks link language, literature, and social life, reflecting the inner and outer aspects of Tamil existence. This study focuses on the Mullai (forest/ pastoral) landscape and its association with kar (rain) as described in classical Tamil texts, particularly the Tolkappiyam.
