Abstract

Even before the emergence of spoken language, human beings expressed their inner emotions through bodily gestures. These external indicators of internal emotions are called "meyppāṭu" (emotive expressions).

In poetry, the poet's inner feelings are naturally reflected. It is necessary for the emotions of the poet to be made evident to the reader. The expression of the poet’s feelings as revealed in the poem is called meyppāṭu.

In "Kurunthogai" literature (a classical Tamil poetic anthology), the emotions of the poet are expressed through the characters that are created. This emotional expression is what is referred to as meyppāṭu. It is considered one of the essential elements of classical Tamil poetry
