Abstract

The functioning of the world is based on the five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and sky. Among these, the earth plays the most crucial role for the survival and sustenance of life. Ancient scholars classified land into five types. Depending on their characteristics, these lands were categorized as kurinji, mullai, marutham, neythal, and paalai.

Such geographic and ecological activities are recorded in ancient literature. In particular, the Pathuppattu texts provide insights into land management, irrigation systems, land fertility, production, and trade markets. This article focuses on analyzing these aspects under the broader theme of material resources
