Abstract

The village of Thiruvisalur is located in Thiruvai Marudur Taluk, Thanjavur district, on the northern bank of the Cauvery River, approximately 8 km east of Kumbakonam. This temple was built during the reign of the early Chola king, Aditya Chola (CE 850–907). In ancient times, the village was known as Viyalur or Veppathur.

The temple is historically significant as a sthalam (sacred site) praised by Thirugnanasambandar, one of the four prominent Saiva saints
