Abstract

Sangam literature provides a detailed account of the livelihood and social life of ancient Tamils. The literature is broadly categorized into Akam (interior) and Puram (exterior) genres.

In Akam literature, the focus is on the inner life of women, including aspects of marriage, family, and hospitality, whereas Puram literature highlights women’s roles in occupations, attire, social duties, valor, and education.

Sangam literature emphasizes the defined social position of women, illustrating that women held a significant and respected place in society. Women played key roles both in labor and in social advancement.

The purpose of this study is to explore women’s life as depicted in Sangam literature, examining both their domestic (Akam) and public (Puram) roles and their contributions to society.
