Abstract

In the Sangam period, kings were revered as the next in status after the deity. The ruler was recognized as a king with established fame. Those who achieved high rank in the kingdom were called "Vendan" (king), and the subordinate kings under the greater kings were referred to as "Kottravan." Only the Chera, Chola, and Pandya rulers were designated as "Vendan." Those who ruled under the protection of the Vendan were known as subordinate kings. Literary works indicate that the dominance of these rulers was significant during the Sangam period.

The "KadayezhuVallal" (the seven great donors), the subordinate kings, and the Chera and CholaVendans were praised for their noble qualities, governance skills, generosity, and literary talents. These historical details are presented by the poets through Natrinai. The purpose of this article is to explore and present those historical facts from the Natrinai poems.
