Philosophical Thoughts in Sundarar's Tevaram
சுந்தரர் தேவாரத்தில் தத்துவச் சிந்தனைகள்
Abstract
This article explores the advanced philosophical reflections of the Tamil people tracing back to the Sangam period, with a particular focus on the Thirumurai’s Seventh Volume (Seventh Thirumurai) hymns by Sundarar. Highlighting the impermanence of worldly life, Sundarar’s verses echo classical Tamil philosophical themes about the transient nature of existence, the ultimate permanence of the divine, and the ethical imperative to perform good deeds during one’s lifetime. Sundarar’s poetry employs vivid imagery and moral exhortation to illustrate human mortality, the futility of material attachment, and the inevitability of death, urging readers toward spiritual awareness and righteousness. The article also discusses concepts such as life’s cyclical impermanence, the fleeting nature of pleasure and pain, and the importance of detachment and compassion as conveyed through these seminal devotional hymns.
