Abstract
This article investigates the theme of war and valor as depicted in ancient Tamil literature, emphasizing the inevitability and naturalness of war in human existence. It highlights how war has been intertwined with the survival instincts of living beings and how this struggle is reflected in the classical Sangam texts. The article explicates the different types of war traditions preserved by Tamil culture, focusing particularly on the valorous "Thumpai" war, and its role in showcasing the strength and noble qualities of warriors. It discusses the social and political significance of war, the cultural codes surrounding battle leadership, and the heroic ideals celebrated through poems and epic narratives such as those about Athiyamaan. Drawing from classical texts like the Purananuru and Pathitrupathu, the article sheds light on the martial ethos, the rules of engagement, and the philosophical reflections on fate and heroism. The warrior’s duty, the celebration of victory, and the cultural glorification of battle are central themes, exemplified in the poetic traditions of Sangam Tamilakam.
