தமிழ் மருத்துவ இதழ்கள் - ஒருபார்வை
Abstract
This article traces the development of Tamil medical journals from the nineteenth century to the present, highlighting their crucial role in disseminating scientific, medical, and public health information to the Tamil-speaking population. It discusses the emergence of various periodicals and magazines dedicated to medical topics, such as Siddha, Ayurveda, Allopathy, and Unani, and examines how advancements in printing and communication have fueled their growth. Early publications like Tamil Magazine (1831), Udhayatharakai (1841), and Agasthya Varthamani (1887) paved the way for a diverse array of monthly, weekly, and daily medical journals. These journals have helped educate the public about disease prevention, hygiene, nutrition, therapy, and contemporary health challenges, reflecting both changing trends in the medical field and the evolving needs of society. The article also underscores the role of Tamil medical journalism in bringing rural and alternative medical knowledge to a wider audience and documents the rise of health-related periodicals with the spread of modern science and technology.
