Abstract

This paper examines the concept of “Vannam” (prosodic features) in the poems of Bharathidasan, an eminent Tamil poet. It focuses on how the various types of Vannam defined in the Tolkappiyam are reflected in his works. The study analyses different forms such as Paa Vannam, Thaa Vannam, Vallisai, Mellisai, Iyaibu, Nedunseer, and Kurunseer, and highlights how these elements enhance the rhythmic and aesthetic quality of his poetry. Furthermore, the paper explains how Bharathidasan skillfully integrates traditional grammatical principles with modern poetic expressions. Through this analysis, the musicality, structural richness, and linguistic beauty of his poems are brought to light. The study ultimately establishes Bharathidasan as a poet who successfully bridges classical Tamil literary tradition with innovative creativity.
