Tribal Culture and Medicine
பழங்குடியினர் பண்பாடும் மருத்துவமும்
Abstract
Tribal communities represent one of the earliest stages of human social development, living in close harmony with nature and maintaining distinct cultural identities. This study explores the culture and traditional medical practices of tribal people. Their lifestyle, customs, food habits, language, and belief systems reflect a deep connection with their geographic environment. Despite modernization, many tribal groups continue to preserve their traditional ways of living. The paper highlights how tribal societies differ in their social structure, economy, and cultural practices. It also discusses the uniqueness of their language, which is often oral in nature, and their strong adherence to rituals and nature worship. A significant focus is given to tribal medicine, which relies heavily on herbal remedies derived from natural resources. These traditional healing practices are used to treat various ailments such as headaches, wounds, skin diseases, bone fractures, and digestive issues. Even in the modern era, some tribal communities continue to depend on indigenous medical systems rather than modern healthcare facilities. While these practices demonstrate valuable indigenous knowledge, lack of awareness and access to modern medicine sometimes leads to health challenges. The study emphasizes the importance of preserving tribal knowledge while integrating it with contemporary healthcare systems for sustainable development.
