Simple Paths of Devotion Shown by the Alvars
ஆழ்வார்கள் காட்டிய எளிய பக்தி நெறிகள்
Abstract
The Alvars, the revered Tamil Vaishnavite saints, played a significant role in shaping the devotional (Bhakti) movement in South India. Their hymns, collectively known as the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, emphasize a simple, accessible, and emotionally rich path to attain divine grace. This paper explores the fundamental principles of devotion as presented by the Alvars, focusing on simplicity, surrender (prapatti), purity of mind, service to devotees, chanting of the divine name, and temple worship. Unlike complex ritualistic practices, the Alvars advocated a direct and heartfelt connection with God through love and devotion. Their teachings made spirituality accessible to common people and transcended social and intellectual barriers. This study highlights how their devotional philosophy continues to influence religious practices and spiritual thought.
