Abstract

This paper examines the concept of pleasure (Inbam) as presented in the Thirukkural, with particular focus on the Inbathuppaal section and the distinction between sensory pleasure (Sirrinbam) and supreme bliss (Perinbam). It explains how sensory pleasure arises from bodily experiences and the five senses, and highlights its temporary and limited nature. In contrast, supreme bliss is described as eternal, spiritual, and rooted in virtues such as love, compassion, charity, and selflessness. The study further explores how desire and attachment act as obstacles to attaining lasting happiness. Through textual references and interpretation, the paper emphasizes that true fulfillment lies not in transient pleasures but in moral living and inner purity. Thus, the Thirukkural not only portrays human emotions and love but also guides individuals toward higher spiritual realization.
