Abstract

This paper explores the spiritual evolution of Vallalar (Ramalinga Adigal), one of the greatest spiritual saints in Tamil tradition. Born in 1823, Vallalar exhibited divine qualities from early childhood, which marked the beginning of his spiritual journey. The study traces his transformation from devotion to deities such as Murugan, Shiva, Vinayagar, and other forms of worship to a higher philosophical realization centered on universal compassion and the worship of divine light (Jyoti). His works, especially Thiruvarutpa, reflect his progressive spiritual stages, including devotional hymns, philosophical insights, and ethical teachings. Vallalar emphasized Jeevakarunyam (compassion towards all living beings) as the highest spiritual principle. The paper highlights how his spiritual path evolved from ritualistic worship to a universal humanitarian outlook rooted in love, equality, and divine grace. Thus, Vallalar’s life and teachings represent a unique synthesis of spirituality, philosophy, and social reform.
