Abstract
The plays of Indira Parthasarathy and Girish Karnad are based on the reconstruction of mythology and history. The socio-historical background of the plays of both of them is examined. Girish Karnad’s play Tughlaq parodies Nehru’s politics, and I.P.’s play Aurangzeb parodies Indira Gandhi’s politics. The impact of the caste massacres committed in Thanjavur’s Keezhavenmani can be felt in I.P.’s Nandan Kathai. It was during the troubled period of the demolition of the Babri Masjid and the Ayodhya Ram Temple controversy that I.P. wrote the play ‘Ramanujar’, which expresses Hindu-Muslim unity. The killing of Bijjala at the altar can be linked to the death of Indira Gandhi. Just as ‘Basavanna’ made everyone Saranar, ‘Ramanuja’ tries to make everyone a Vaishnava. The story of Nandan Kathai is based on Saivism, Palipeedam is based on Veerasaivism, and Ramanuja is based on Vaishnavism.
