King Pari of Parambu
பறம்பின் மன்னன் பாரி
Abstract
Tamil literature isn’t merely a simple expression of language; it’s the very lifeblood of a society, a people, and a culture. Sangam literature stands as its foundational stage. The kings, poets, daily lives, natural landscapes, and human relationships depicted in Sangam poetry provide us with grand traditions that are still relevant for study in the modern world. Among the kings celebrated in Sangam poems, ‘Velpari’ holds a significant place. Whenever Sangam literature mentions Pari, he is described as the most generous of patrons, the embodiment of compassion, a lover of nature, and someone deeply connected with his people. A novel written with Velpari as its central character functions as both a historical document and a work of literary art. The author skillfully combines evidence from Sangam literature, historical facts, and traditional tales to create a narrative that is both accessible and imaginative for the reader. In this way, the novel acts as a bridge between ancient Sangam history and modern literary art. It not only accurately portrays ancient history but also transforms into an insightful book essential for humanity today. Its love for nature is connected with modern environmental protection movements. Velpari’s concern for his people’s welfare is linked to concepts of human rights and social justice. Thus, examining the Velpari novel through the lens of contemporary Tamil research provides us with a new world of thought. This is a timeless creation that seamlessly connects the beauty of the past, the challenges of the present, and the opportunities of the future. It rescues our ancient literature from a purely historical perspective and helps us understand it by linking it with modern life principles. Through this effort, it connects the profound depth of our ancient literary tradition with the complexities of contemporary life.
