A Study on AI and the Digital Divide and its Impact on Education
Abstract
The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into educational systems is reshaping teaching methodologies, learning experiences, and institutional management worldwide. However, the expansion of AI-driven technologies has also intensified concerns regarding the digital divide—the gap between individuals and communities with adequate access to digital tools, infrastructure, and skills and those without.
This study examines how AI influences educational equity, focusing on disparities in access to devices, high-speed internet, digital literacy, and AI-powered learning platforms. While AI technologies such as adaptive learning systems, intelligent tutoring systems, and predictive analytics offer personalized instruction and improved academic outcomes, their benefits are often concentrated in well-resourced schools and regions. Marginalized populations, including low-income, rural, and underrepresented communities, risk further exclusion due to limited technological infrastructure and insufficient policy support.
The study analyzes existing literature and policy frameworks to evaluate both the transformative potential of AI and the structural inequalities it may reinforce. It concludes by proposing strategic interventions—such as equitable infrastructure investment, inclusive AI design, digital literacy initiatives, and ethical governance frameworks—to ensure that AI serves as a tool for educational inclusion rather than a driver of inequality.
