Abstract

The entrepreneurial mentality and recognizing new possibilities are key to the development of new enterprises in today’s changing, technological business world. The entrepreneurial mentality is a way of thinking that places an emphasis on innovation, the ability to take initiative, resilience, taking risks in a calculated way and the ability to adjust to what is uncertain. Having an entrepreneurial mentality allows individuals to see the possible where some may only see the challenges; therefore, transforming ideas into profitable businesses. Recognizing new possibilities is a systematic means of scanning the environment for unmet needs, looking for opportunities to fill the gaps in the marketplace, gathering information from the marketplace to find how to best meet the needs of customers, and utilizing this knowledge to evaluate the viability and profit potential of potential ventures.
This paper will review the interrelationship of the entrepreneurial mentality and recognizing opportunities; while also explaining how cognitive abilities, creative thinking, prior knowledge, social networks and market knowledge connect to find opportunities that can be realized. Due to the rapid advancements that are taking place in technology, digital transformation and artificial intelligence, entrepreneurs need to develop agility and strategic thinking in order to respond quickly to changing demands of consumers and continually changing levels of competition. This paper will also examine the importance of education and experiential learning, as well as the role of ecosystems for innovation in developing entrepreneurial skills.
