Cooperatives in Indian Knowledge Systems: A Commerce Perspective
Abstract
Indian Knowledge Systems emphasize collective welfare, ethical conduct, and sustainable economic practices. Within this framework, cooperatives represent an indigenous form of enterprise that integrates business activity with social responsibility. This paper explores cooperatives as an enterprising business model rooted in Indian Knowledge Systems and evaluates their relevance from a commerce perspective. Drawing upon ancient Indian economic thought and modern cooperative practices, the study highlights how cooperatives balance commercial objectives with community development. The paper argues that cooperatives are not merely institutional arrangements but reflections of India’s long-standing economic wisdom, offering valuable insights for inclusive and sustainable business practices in the contemporary economy.
