Abstract

Ethics isn’t new to Indian economic thought — it’s been woven in since the beginning. India’s Knowledge System (IKS) gives great significance to values like Dharma, Satya, social responsibility, and collective good. These very principles lie at the heart of co-operative organizations, where profit is not the only concern, but importantly includes joint benefit, collective decision-making, and tending to the community as a whole. This study explores the role of ethics within the Indian Knowledge System manifest in actual commercial decisions, and their integration within the cooperative framework. By reviewing books, reports, and existing research, it is evident that ethics grounded in IKS promote greater transparency, inclusiveness, sustainability, and accountability in co-operatives. The main point? When co-operatives embrace these ethical principles, they offer a solid, ethical alternative to the profit-at-any-cost mentality that dominates a lot of contemporary Indian business.
