Youth Cooperatives: A Pathway to Sustainable Development

Abstract

Youth cooperatives have emerged as an inclusive and sustainable business model that empowers young people through collective ownership, democratic governance, and shared economic benefits. Using a conceptual and descriptive research approach, the study analyses the contributions of youth cooperatives toward achieving selected Sustainable Development Goals. SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). The paper highlights challenges faced by youth cooperatives and suggests policy measures for strengthening their role in sustainable development. This paper explores how youth-led cooperative enterprises contribute to sustainable development by fostering entrepreneurship, promoting democratic participation, and advancing community resilience. Drawing on existing literature and case-based insights, the study highlights the potential of youth cooperatives to address multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in developing economies. The paper concludes with policy recommendations to strengthen youth engagement in cooperative movements.
