Challenges and Solutions in Transliteration in Tamil
தமிழ்மொழியில் செய்யப்படும் ஒலிபெயர்ப்பில் ஏற்படும் சிக்கல்களும் தீர்வுகளும்
Abstract
As the Tamil language moves toward globalization, it naturally encounters multilingual environments. In such contexts, when words from other languages are written in Tamil, transliteration often presents certain challenges. This study identifies these challenges and explores methods and strategies to overcome them. Special attention is given to proper nouns, which reveal difficulties in transliteration. The main causes of these challenges include differences in phonetics between the original language and Tamil, as well as variations in policies or opinions among Tamil scholars regarding transliteration standards. This study addresses these challenges and proposes some solutions.
