Abstract

In Tamil literary history, a unique position is held by collections that combine both poems and anthologies, known as Sangam literary collections. Among the eight classical Sangam anthologies, the Pattuppattu (Ten Idylls) stands out.

The term pattu refers to a set of ten long poems, whereas thogai refers to a collection. These collections consist of individual minor poems (uthirippadals) composed by various poets. Over time, poems created by different poets across different periods were compiled systematically, giving rise to what is known as a thogai (anthology).
