Abstract

In medieval Tamil literature, devotional (Bhakti) works emerged as the dominant literary tradition. The lives of the poets who composed these works, however, were often filled with hardship and suffering, contrasting sharply with the richness of their compositions. Events and struggles from their lives are frequently reflected in their songs.

While Shaiva literature was enriched by the Nayanmars, Vaishnavite literature flourished through the contributions of the Alvars. Yet, across time, there has been limited interest in understanding the poets themselves-their life conditions and personal experiences-even when studying and appreciating their literary creations.

The aim of this study is to explore the life circumstances of the Alvars, the Vaishnavite poets, during the Bhakti literary period, thereby providing insight into the social and personal context behind their devotional compositions.
