Influence of Medicinal Plants on Place Names in Mannar District, Sri Lanka – A Study
இலங்கையில் மன்னார் மாவட்ட இடப்பெயர்களில் மூலிகைத்தாவரங்களின் செல்வாக்கு – ஓர் ஆய்வு
Abstract
Although there are multiple reasons behind place names, scholars have observed a significant presence of place names derived from plant species. As Ku. Bhagavathi notes, “In some locations, the prevalence and uniqueness of certain plants might have led to the creation of plant-based place names” (Bhagavathi, p. 12).
Studying these plant-based place names provides valuable information regarding the richness of local flora, their natural habitats, and the lifestyle of people who utilize them. This research aims to examine and document the place names in Mannar District, Northern Province of Sri Lanka, that are connected with medicinal plants. Through this study, the medicinal plant wealth of Mannar District can be better understood
