Magical Realism in Tamil Short Stories
தமிழ்ச் சிறுகதைகளில் 'மேஜிக்கல் ரியலிசம்"
Abstract
This article investigates the influence and characteristics of magical realism in Tamil short stories, tracing its historical evolution and thematic innovation from the twentieth century onwards. It highlights how Tamil writers, inspired by global literary movements and local traditions, blend reality with magical or surreal elements to create narratives that challenge conventional realism. The paper focuses on the creativity and imaginative genius of prominent Tamil writers like Veeramamunivar, Pudumaippithan, G. Nagarajan, and Vimaladiththan, who have incorporated magical realism to evoke wonder, disrupt linear narratives, and reflect complex human emotions and societal contradictions. Through detailed analyses of significant stories such as Pudumaippithan’s "Kaanchanai," Nagarajan’s "Derlin Shirtum," and Vimaladiththan’s "Siru Mani Konda Malar," the article explicates how magical realism enriches Tamil literature by merging the metaphysical with everyday realities.
