Abstract

Pattinattar also known by his given name Thiruvenkaadar was a great saint and renown poet of Tamil Nadu. He sang many philosophical songs to enlighten people on the blissful state of renunciation. His work focused on the human life and its complex dimensions and he insisted repeatedly not to be attached to the body and its pleasures. Pattinattar”s poetry is full of strong and pathetic statements of the uncertainty of human life and of the folly of the pursuit of riches. Thus, this article explores the impermanence of life, the impermanence of human body, the impermanence of youth, the impermanence of wealth, the importance of sense control and the burden of birth as taught by Pattinattar in hishymns.
