Abstract

The ancient Tamils built their way of life based on the characteristics of the land they inhabited. Among the five landscapes (Tinai), Neithal Tinai represents the seashore region, and the lifestyle of the fisherfolk (Parathavar) living in this coastal environment is beautifully portrayed both in the Sangam classic Akananuru and in the modern novel Alaivaykkaiyil. During the Sangam age, the fisherfolk lived in small huts built on sandy shores. In contrast, the novel Alaivaykkaiyil shows that today’s fisherfolk live in well-built houses according to their improved economic status. Their primary food continues to be fish-based dishes. Although fishing remains their main occupation, they now use technologically advanced fishing equipment. The beliefs in divine powers and spirits that existed in the ancient community are still found among the present-day fisherfolk. In the past, the groom’s family offered gifts (seer) to the bride’s family during marriage, but Alaivaykkaiyil reflects how this custom has reversed — now, the bride’s family provides the dowry.
