Abstract

The aloevera plant (Kattralai in Tamil) is a symbol for many things: nature’s resilience and patience, women’s mental fortitude, and their ability to overcome social challenges. The psychological struggles of the female characters in the novel are explained through this symbolism, as is their stance in overcoming social opposition. The life of Manimekalai, born into a village environment of inequality, doubt, and suffering, is likened to a cactus that adapts to different environments. The story symbolically portrays women’s lives, their mental strength, and the difficulties they face due to societal restrictions. To achieve a life where “everything is for everyone”, women face many struggles. In line with this idea, the novel Kattralai by Tamilselvi, introduces a new world for women and a communal lifestyle where all possessions are shared. The novel describes a new social system that strives for a life of Sisterhood, free from caste and religious discrimination.
