Indigenous Communities & Fisherfolk
Abstract
The traditional occupation of the Parathana (indigenous) people has been hunting and fishing. In Kanyakumari district, the coastal communities have long been associated with the fishing profession. Due to the proximity of land to the sea in various regions, the people of these areas have, from ancient times, engaged in fishing as a hereditary occupation. These communities are known by the names Parathavar, Paravar, or Paravars. During the Sangam period, they lived with distinction as wealthy landowners, traders, and shipowners. Fishing and pearl diving were their primary occupations. They belong to the Nagar (urban/trading) class. Literary sources contain numerous references to the Parathavar community. The term “Parathavar” has several explanations and interpretations. Inscriptions related to the Parathavar are found extensively in Kanyakumari district. The references about the Parathavar in this study have been compiled from such literary and epigraphical sources.
