Abstract

Many literary works praise both the generosity of patrons and the knowledge and virtues of poets. The poems of poets celebrate the magnanimity of patrons who gave with discernment and generosity. In the history of Tamil literature, the verses composed by poets who hold an irreplaceable place beautifully reflect their deep thought, imaginative power, eloquence, humanism, and patriotism. On the one hand, poets excelled in wisdom and intellect, yet on the other hand, they often had to depend on patrons for their livelihood. “A life of hunger and scholarship” became the hallmark of poets. Although their songs extolled the generosity of kings and patrons, behind them lay hidden pains—such as the neglect of the poets’ scholarship, their poverty, and helplessness. In this context, this article seeks to explain the ideas expressed in poems from the Thanippadal anthology that center around poverty.
